Silent Journey
Documentary of a journey above the polar circle
6 min, 16mm color 2010

Camera, sound and directed by Johannes Kochs
Production: shorefilm

Film and journeying go well together. Their contrary mode of operation, from the inside out and vice versa, creates a state of cine-trance.

Johannes Kochs’s Silent Journey leads us through a Finnish landscape, first by train then by car, to a wooden hut. Aside from a single train announcement, no words are spoken; there are very few people. The images of nature, part of ourselves, the hut a metaphor for our spirit as physically present, various aggregate states—the net result is the sum of many moments of strong emotion, free of judgment, saturated with melancholy. Six minutes of contemplation: a cinematic prayer.
