A film documenting the opera “Der Freischütz”

The dress rehearsal of Armin Holzʼs production of Carl Maria von Weberʼs “Der Freischütz” (usually translated as The Freeshooter, or The Marksman) was filmed on October 23, 2013, at the Nationaltheater Mannheim. The resulting film comprises excerpts from the opera and is 61:50 minutes in length.
HD 16:9 format, 2014

Theater director Armin Holzʼs production constitutes a modern interpretation of “Der Freischütz”; reduced to the bare essentials, the production combines elements of theater and modern art, explores the motifs of German Romanticism, and relies on the subtle power of association. The stage design, developed in close collaboration with New Leipzig School painter Matthias Weischer, works with Sebastian Alphonsʼs (Staatsoper unter den Linden) lighting and Esther Walzʼs costumes to create a color scheme reminiscent of painters such as Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman and light artists such as Dan Flavin and James Turrell. This film documents the dress rehearsal.
